Physical therapy addresses the musculoskeletal aspect of pelvic pain. Muscle spasms, muscle weakness and/or nerve tension can be the result of various pelvic floor dysfunctions or can be the cause of pelvic pain. Some pelvic floor dysfunctions treated by physical therapy include: vulvodynia, interstitial cystitis (IC), dyspareunia (pain with intercourse), vaginismus, endometriosis, vestibulitis and chronic prostatitis.
Physical therapy treatments for pelvic pain are individualized based upon evaluation findings. Treatment typically includes soft tissue manipulation, trigger point release, stretching, biofeedback and modalities such as ultrasound, low level laser and electrical stimulation.
